gene leedy

The creative architectural genius and focus of this tour and website, Gene Leedy came to Winter Haven in 1954 to build a commissioned house for the local theater manager. He opened his office here and never left. Leedy’s innovative work with pre-stressed concrete and his development of double t-beams leave an enduring legacy relevant to the past and the future of architecture. Leedy’s many awards are a testament to a steadfast adherence to his modern design philosophy. His earliest recognition came in 1948 when, at the age of 20 and still a student at the University of Florida, he received Honorable Mention award in a Hidden Talent Competition sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. More recently, in 1992, he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida and received its Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. Leedy continues to practice architecture from his Winter Haven office, with his most recent residential project completed in 2006.
